Dr. Schmader is Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC, Department of Medicine and the Director of the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) and the Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care. He is the past Chief of the Division of Geriatrics. He is the Director of the NIA-funded P30 Duke Pepper Older Americans Independence Center and Co-PI of the NIAID funded Vaccine and Therapeutics Effectiveness Unit (VTEU) at Duke.
He conducts clinical research studies in herpes zoster, infections, and vaccines in older adults funded by grants the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and VA Office of Research and Development. He has played a pivotal role in the development of zoster vaccines in older adults. Dr. Schmader has published over 225 peer-reviewed journal articles. He serves on the Working Groups for Herpes Zoster, Influenza, COVID-19 and Adult Immunization for the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). He is the American Geriatrics Society liaison to the ACIP.
