As a research scientist at the University of Louisville, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the breadth of my career has focused on research into understanding the role macrophages play in determining the outcome of a variety of bacterial diseases. My recent pre-pandemic work at the University has focused on the means thru which Yersinia pestis hijacks the recycling pathway as a means to establish itself within host macrophages prior to dissemination. In more recent months, I have had the opportunity to develop a deep appreciation for virology and the complex interplay between the immune response and morbidity in betacoronavirus infections.
