Jenine Leal, PhD is an assistant professor in the Departments of Community Health Sciences and Microbiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases, University of Calgary. She is also a research scientist for the provincial Infection Prevention and Control program at Alberta Health Services. She has a PhD in Health Economics and a MSc in Healthcare Epidemiology from the University of Calgary. Dr. Leal’s research focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating the impact of novel approaches to infection prevention and control to improve patient safety, outcomes, and lower health care costs. More specifically, her program of research aims to determine the economic burden of antimicrobial resistance to the healthcare system and society; identifying best practices of screening for antimicrobial resistant organisms in hospitalized patients; and evaluating interventions to reduce hospital-acquired infections using secondary data sources.
