Varea H. Costello, DO, MPH

LCDR Costello earned his B.A. in Theology, magna cum laude, from the University of Dallas, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and among other honors, chosen by the faculty as the most outstanding graduate in the college’s Theology Department. He earned his medical degree from Rocky Vista University of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colorado, where he was awarded a commission through the Navy’s Health Professional Scholarship Program. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth Virginia, and then remained as the 2019-2020 Chief of Residents of the IM Residency Program. He completed a joint Infectious Diseases Fellowship and Master of Public Health at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland, and currently stationed at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth as a staff Infectious Diseases physician. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, and presently has an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. His research interests included emerging infectious diseases, global health, and tropical medicine.
