Leena B. Mithal, MD MSCI is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Attending Physician in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship. Her clinical expertise and translational research focus is perinatal and congenital infections. She studies in utero and early life microbial exposures, the interaction of microbes with immune system, and impact on health outcomes. Aspects of her work include: novel diagnostics for early onset neonatal sepsis, proteomic and metagenomic signatures in umbilical cord blood, peripartum antibiotic management, the impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy and the placenta, perinatal transmission of multidrug resistant bacteria, early life microbiome, molecular diagnostics, and congenital CMV infection. Dr. Mithal is a longstanding member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Infectious Diseases Education Subcommittee and serves on the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Research Affairs Committee.
