Leah Loerinc, BA is a fourth year MD/MPH student at Emory University School of Medicine. After graduating from Brown University in 2015 with a degree in biology and a special focus on microbiology, immunology, and vaccine science, Leah moved to Nashville, TN to work as a research assistant at Vanderbilt University producing monoclonal antibodies to a variety of infectious diseases. She then transitioned to a position as a clinical trials associate at Vanderbilt where she participated in a multi-center phase II clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of the high-dose influenza vaccine in pediatric stem cell transplant recipients.
Leah began medical school at Emory University in 2017 with a strong interest in pediatric infectious diseases and has since been working in co-STI research in HIV-positive adolescents and young adults in Atlanta, GA. She was awarded a 2019 IDSA GERM award to look at incidence, reinfection, and discrepancy between reported exposure history and site positivity of co-STIs in HIV-positive youth, which she is presenting at IDWeek 2020. Currently, Leah is obtaining her MPH in epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University while working on implementing a peer-facilitated condom distribution program for HIV-positive men who have sex with men in Atlanta with the hopes of improving condom use and reducing co-STIs in this group.
Upon graduation from medical school, Leah plans to pursue a career in pediatric infectious diseases. She hopes to continue developing her passion for the field by combining research, clinical, and educational opportunities as an academic physician.
