CDR Mark Simons currently serves as the Deputy Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) at the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences. He also serves as the Director of the Naval Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (NIDDL) at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), and is the Capability Area Manager of the Wound Infections Research portfolio for the Military Infectious Diseases Research Program (MIDRP).
CDR Simons received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in Molecular Biology with a focus on Microbiology studying Neisseria gonorrhoeae pathogenesis and host innate immune responses to infection. He also completed a Masters in Science for Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Following his postdoctoral training, Dr. Simons was commissioned in 2009 as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps as a Microbiologist. During his service in the Navy, he has served at duty stations including Naval Medical Center San Diego where he board certified in clinical microbiology as a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM), overseas at at the Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU)-6 in Peru overseeing disease surveillance activities for respiratory and enteric infections and emerging infections across multiple Latin American countries and throughout Peru, and most recently at the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring leading product development efforts to counter antimicrobial resistant bacteria in wound infections.
