Margaret E. Bauer, PhD, is Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and the Director of Foundational Science integration, Phase 1 (preclerkship) Curriculum, at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). Since 1996, her research focused on host-pathogen interactions of Haemophilus ducreyi, which causes non-healing skin lesions; manifestations include limb ulcerations in children in developing tropical countries and the sexually transmitted infection chancroid. She has recently taken on leadership roles in medical student education at IUSM, including development and management of a new preclinical curriculum and oversight of the medical knowledge competency. She also manages the graduate programs in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, in addition to teaching microbiology to medical and graduate students in various courses.
