Corine Geurts van Kessel obtained her medical degree at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 2004. In 2009, she achieved her PhD at the departments of Virology and Pulmonary Medicine, on the role of dendritic cell subsets in influenza virus immunity. After her PhD she received her training as a clinical microbiologist at the Erasmus MC Rotterdam (2009 - 2014). She currently works as a clinical virologist at the department of Viroscience of the Erasmus MC, where she leads the laboratory of serology and virus culture and is a member of the WHO reference laboratory.
As a clinical virologist, Corine Geurts van Kessel has a specific interest in filling the knowledge gaps in disease kinetics and diagnostics of emerging viral infections, such as Lassa fever, Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2. She performs expert consultations for patients of the Erasmus MC and for other hospitals within and outside the Netherlands. The research of Corine Geurts van Kessel focusses on the immune response against neurotropic viruses, and specifically Rabies.
