Dr. Valerie Vaughn is an Assistant Professor and Director of Hospital Medicine Research at the University of Utah. Her research focuses on improving the safety of hospitalized patients by combating healthcare associated infections and reducing antibiotic overuse, particularly during transitions of care. She has a Career Development Award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to improve antibiotic prescribing and diagnosis of infections during hospitalization. In addition to her research, Dr. Vaughn runs a mentorship program for hospitalists interested in Quality Improvement research. From March to May this year, she also helped lead the University of Michigan's COVID-19 surge response as co-director of the Regional Infectious Containment Unit. Dr. Vaughn currently serves as SHM’s Liaison to the CDC's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee and on research committees for the Society of Hospital Medicine and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
