Carol Chou, MD is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of General Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She attended Harvard/Radcliffe Colleges as an undergraduate (magna cum laude in biochemistry), received her MD degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and did her Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Chicago Hospitals. She completed the Academy of Communication in Healthcare (ACH) facilitator-in-training program in 2014, served as Co-Director of its Faculty in Training program from 2016 to 2020, and in 2020 was elected to ACH Fellowship. At Penn, she teaches medical students, residents, and faculty on topics such as delivering bad news, communication at the end of life, challenging patient encounters, behavior change counseling, and meaning in medicine. As cochair of communication training for Penn’s Internal Medicine residency program, she has developed a coaching program in communication and professionalism for internal medicine residents as well as for faculty. She also has research and curricular interests in humanism and professionalism. She was the 2016 faculty recipient of the Perelman School of Medicine’s Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine award, the 2018 recipient of the Radhika Srinivasan Award for Professionalism and Humanism from the Department of Medicine, and has been named one of Philadelphia Magazine's Top Docs since 2018. She has taught nationally on using communication skills to improve adherence in patients with diabetes, using personal awareness to enhance one's efficacy as a healthcare provider, relationship-centered patient care, leadership conflict competence, professionalism and cultural competence, improving the function of interprofessional teams and team members, shared decision making, and coaching remedial learners in communication skills.
