Conversations with LGBTQ Youth; the Role of the Pediatrician

Pediatricians share a special space with children and adolescents. We observe babies becoming children, children becoming teenagers, and teenagers becoming young adults. As children move into adolescence, confidential time alone with the medical provider is essential to gather information about many aspects of a developing teen’s life, including sexuality and gender. While most children and teens disclose their LGBQ or trans identity to friends first, pediatricians can play a crucial role in answering questions and assisting young people by normalizing all sexual and gender identities. This lecture provides information about LGBTQ+ youth, disclosure of LGBTQ identity and the role that pediatricians can play in this vulnerable process.
