O0244 Oct.5: 10:32am - Collaborative development of a training tool to promote immigrant health: introducing the Immigrant Partnerships and Advocacy Curricular Kit (I-PACK)

As the population of immigrant children increases in the United States, there is growing interest in immigrant and refugee health among pediatric educators and trainees. The recent influx of unaccompanied minors and concurrent increase in families experiencing separation at the United States – Mexico border has further highlighted the importance of this topic in medical education. However, many trainees feel ill-equipped in caring for this population, which faces unique barriers to accessing health care and has specific health care needs.

The Midwest Consortium of Global Child Health Educators, a seven-institute organization, identified the need for comprehensive, open access resources to assist medical educators in teaching immigrant and refugee health. The consortium has previously collaborated to develop curricula in pediatric global health education, including SUGARPREP (www.sugarprep.org). SUGARPREP is currently used by over 150 institutions across the world, and includes educational resources in global health simulation, pre-departure training, and procedural training in low-resource settings. Building on same curriculum framework and network of experts , the consortium developed modular and modifiable curriculum in immigrant health entitled the Immigrant Partnerships and Advocacy Curricular Kit (I-PACK). This presentation will describe the development and early implementation of I-PACK, and discuss how medical educators can enhance their current training programs using I-PACK. I-PACK consists of eight domains developed by experts in immigrant and refugee health, shown in Figure 1. Each of the eight domains can be taught individually or in combination with other domains, which allows educators to tailor the course to the specific goals and needs in their setting. The content can be taught in small blocks of time, such as over the residency noon hour or medical school lecture slots, or used to create a full-day course on immigrant and refugee health. Each domain is also customizable; specific activities within the domain can be chosen based on learner need or community needs. Each domain contains an overview, a facilitator guide, and a learner guide. In addition, many domains contain additional interactive multi-media materials such as PowerPoint slides for didactic education, videos or narrated presentations, cases, and/or handouts. I-PACK is an open-access resource, intended to be disseminated and used widely to promote immigrant and refugee health and advocacy and partner in improving outcomes for immigrant and refugee children.
