Committee/Organizing Meeting
: Carework in the Academy Initiative
The Carework in the Academy Initiative met at the 2015 & 2016 AAAs with concerns and questions about how career trajectories are impacted by policies and practices that affect us as caregivers of children, parents, partners, and other special people in our lives. We followed with an online survey to gather academic caregivers’ stories. Over 400 anthropologists responded. Both the survey and focus groups address caregiving experiences in academia across institutions as they relate to advancement barriers and strategies for negotiating with institutions. The focus groups being held at this 2018 AAA are intended to confirm, refine, and otherwise expand these topics. Recruitment emails to register for the focus groups will go out in October. This initiative is being led by Sallie Han, Jill Fleuriet, Rebecca Galemba, and Nikky Greer.
