The AAA Climate Change Internship Program (CCIP) is a virtual platform that brings together students from around the country to complete a project for the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP). COP24 will be held in Katowice, Poland in December 2018. The CCIP is tasked with preparing a museum quality display to engage the public with an anthropological voice on climate change at COP24.
The Interns selected by application began working together in January 2018 and spend a year preparing to present in Katowice. The work program includes applying academic work in anthropological and climate change theory, weekly meetings via video conference and creating a museum quality display that appeals to the theme, ‘Changing Together,’ for presentation to an international audience of about twenty-thousand people involved in international climate negotiations.
The results of this year long project will be displayed at the AAA annual meeting in San Jose, where CCIP interns will engage anthropologists in a dress rehearsal for COP24. Drawing on anthropological fieldwork, our research will highlight the utility of individual and local contributions in promoting sustainability. We hope to engage the general public in broad and deep discussions about the importance of individual efforts and inspire them about the possibilities for institutional and behavioral change.
