We will be featuring TAJEN: INTERACTIVE, an immersive multimodal installation on the ancient bloodsport of cockfighting in the arid landscape of Negara, Bali.
The installation will feature five projector screens playing five different segments of Tajen, a sensory ethnography film on the Balinese cockfight.
Two laptops will be setup for the exploration of Tajen: Interactive, an interactive web documentary made by visual anthropologists, which uses different modes of representation to evoke and explain the cultural, historical, and psychological aspects of cockfighting. The directors of Tajen: Interactive will be present to discuss the project.
The installation will also highlight a special exhibition of selected paintings from the Mead Bateson Collection on folktale, myth, ritual, and daily life in Bali.
In 1936, Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson commissioned Balinese artists to create visual depictions of their daily lives and imaginary worlds. The couple ultimately amassed a collection of over 1,200 paintings, primarily by a group of thirty artists from Batuan. An astounding body of work, representing an innovative period in Balinese art, these paintings are a rich resource for art lovers and Bali enthusiasts interested in Balinese ritual, folklore, and history.
