(5-0815) Global Indigenous Media: ten years later (GIM+10)

2018 marks a decade since the publication of Wilson & Stewart's ground-breaking anthology Global Indigenous Media: Cultures, Poetics, and Politics from Duke University Press. The contributors' analyses and discussion of the relationships built around media technologies and Indigenous Peoples remain relevant, since today we teach, research, and write within an unprecedented digital-intensive and globalized media world. This roundtable discussion will invite the contributors to this seminal anthology to look back at the state of the interdisciplinary Indigenous Media Studies field as it developed in the early 2000s and to dialogue with the "next generation" of IM scholars regarding the changing state of the field during the past decade. What traditional and new media practices have become instrumental today in Indigenous communities, and what major events have impacted Indigenous Peoples’ communication and self-determination? Have we seen more Indigenous/First Nations scholars and practitioners contribute to Indigenous Media Studies as a field, and if so, what is the reach today when we refer to a “global” indigenous media? What are the divides that persist in the exchange of scholarship in the field? What has been the impact of this anthology for the individual contributors, for scholars who study and teach it, and for the field itself? What would a 2018 edition of this volume look like?
