The 2018 Patty Jo Watson Distinguished Lecturer is Charles Cobb (Florida Museum of Natural History): Archaeological studies of memory show how the past is resurrected through selective practices of remembrance. Strategies of social amnesia receive less attention, however. The American Southeast provides a useful vantage point for exploring how decisions about space legislate acts of forgetting through Renewal, where the built environment was used to seal off and rewrite the past; Clearance, where Native American removal became a pretext to deny their history; Severance, where researchers wedded to a trope of collapse have occluded links between past and modern landscapes.
